How ToSet up a new society

Setting Up

Setting up a society is really easy!

*  You will need 12 people who are interested and willing to join your society.
*  You will need to have a discussion about what your society aims to do.
*  You will need some students to volunteer to run the society and who are approved by the members.  If there are many students who want to do this, it may be worth running elections.
*  You need to read and complete the Society Registration Form and a Society Constitution to state the society’s objectives and submit it to [email protected].
*  When your society has been registered and set up on the website, you need to ask all members to register and join the society.

You then have a society!

Running a Society

How societies are structured and operate is written comprehensively in the constitution.  However, generally speaking, societies are:

*  Run by students for students
*  Democratically run with annual elections at an Annual General Meeting (AGM)
*  Bound by the rules outlined in the constitution
*  Ratified (agreed) by the Societies Council

Societies are run by democratically elected Student Executive Members (President, Treasurer, Secretary etc) for their members.  Societies have different ideas and organise various events including meetings, conferences, lectures, parties, social trips and glitzy balls.  (Please see Society Events Checklist under Downloads)

Useful Documents

As well as these pages, there are also lots of useful documents to assist you with running your society listed below.

There is a general Society Information Booklet (see under Downloads) which also lists the key points of how to run a society.
